祇園祭 (GION Matsuri)

長刀鉾

この鉾は毎年山鉾巡行の先頭を行きます。
鉾頭の長刀は疫病邪悪を払うものとされ長刀の刃先は決して御所と八坂神社の方に向かぬよう取り付けてある。 稚児が乗るのはこの鉾だけである。

This is known for its long halberd, and a chigo (the deity's page boy dressed in traditional Shinto robes) sits on it.

Abura-Tenjin Yama

函谷鉾

孟嘗君が函谷関で、家来に鶏の泣き真似をさせて難を逃れた故事をかたどった鉾。
前掛けは旧約聖書の創世記の場面をえがいた16世紀の毛綴で重要文化財である

 

Kanko Hoko

The decoration on the top of this float is a crescent moon which symbolizes the story about "Kanko" Barrier in the ancient Chinese legend.
Like many other floats, this float displays both western and eastern art masterpieces.
The Gobelin tapestry portrayed a scene from the Genesis of the Old Testament, is hung on the front of the float, and the one on the back is Japanese screen with calligraphy by Saint Kobo Daishi.

 
 
船鉾

神功皇后をめぐる説話によって鉾全体を船の形にし、舳先には金色の鷁、艫には黒漆塗螺鈿の飛龍文の舵をつけ、船端には朱漆塗の高欄をめぐらしている。

Fune Hoko

This float is built in the shape of the ancient ship.
According to the Japanese tale, this ship was used for carrying the Japanese empress who is still warshipped among the woman as the God of safe delivery.

橋弁慶山

 

Hashibenkei Yama

This scene was derived from a Noh play.
The heavy statue of the boy is supported on the bridge railing by a single nail.

 
南観音山

昔は舁山であったものを、曳山に改造したもので、楊柳観音像を安置し、一名下り観音山と呼ぶ。 前掛けは華麗なペルシャ絹緞痛の逸品、水引は舞楽図の刺繍である。

Minami-Kannon Yama

This float is dedicated to Yoryu Kannon, the Goddness of Mercy.
This float is now drawn as a hoko-float although listed as yama, and has a pine tree instead of a halberd on its roof.
